Job Interview Questions and Answers in English (Practice Guide)

Most job interview prep focuses on what to say. In a second language, the harder problem is usually saying it smoothly, under pressure, in real time. Here are the questions that come up in almost every English-language interview, and how to actually answer them.

“Tell me about yourself”

Almost always the opening question, and the one candidates most often answer badly by either reciting their full resume or freezing entirely.

Tip: use a simple three-part structure — a one-line summary of who you are professionally, one or two relevant highlights, then a bridge to why you’re interested in this specific role. Keep it under 60–90 seconds.

“What are your greatest strengths?” and “what’s a weakness you’re working on?”

Both questions are really testing self-awareness. For weaknesses specifically, naming something genuine and describing a concrete step you’ve taken to improve it lands far better than a disguised strength (“I work too hard”).

Tip: pick a real, moderate weakness — not something core to the job you’re applying for — and always pair it with one specific action you’ve taken to address it.

Behavioral questions (“tell me about a time…”)

“Describe a challenge you overcame,” “tell me about a time you handled a conflict with a coworker,” “describe a time you showed leadership” — all asking for one real story, not a general philosophy.

Use the STAR structure: Situation (brief context), Task (what you needed to do), Action (what you specifically did), Result (the outcome, ideally with a number or concrete detail).

Tip: prepare two or three real stories in advance that can flex to answer several different behavioral questions, rather than trying to invent a new story on the spot for each one.

The full interview, stage by stage

A real interview isn’t just the Q&A in the middle — English comes up at every stage, and each one has its own small language challenges:

BeforeConfirming or rescheduling, phone screening, asking about format
OpeningSmall talk, introducing yourself, handling a late or virtual start
Core questionsStrengths, weaknesses, salary, gaps, behavioral stories
LogisticsAvailability, relocation, remote work, benefits
ClosingAsking your own questions, thank-you follow-up, negotiating an offer

Frequently asked questions

How do I answer “why should we hire you” in English?

Connect one or two of your specific strengths directly to what the role actually needs, using a concrete example — avoid generic claims like “I’m a hard worker” with nothing behind them.

How do I explain a gap in my work history?

State the reason briefly and factually, then pivot immediately to what you did during that time or what you’re bringing now — dwelling on the gap itself draws more attention to it than necessary.

Should I send a thank-you message after a job interview?

Yes — a short, specific thank-you email within 24 hours, referencing something particular from the conversation, is a normal and expected part of English-language interview etiquette.

How do I negotiate a job offer in English politely?

Express genuine enthusiasm for the offer first, then state your counter clearly and factually (“Based on my research and experience, I was hoping for a salary closer to…”) rather than apologizing for asking.
