Verb “to be”
Function: The verb “to be” is used to express existence, identity, qualities, and states of being. It can act as a main verb or an auxiliary verb in various tenses and forms.
- Example: “I am a teacher.” (Main verb indicating identity) / “She is reading a book.” (Auxiliary verb in present continuous tense)
Forms: The verb “to be” has different forms depending on the subject and tense. In the present tense, it takes the forms “am” (for the first person singular), “is” (for the third person singular), and “are” (for all other subjects).
- Example: “I am”, “You are”, “He/She/It is”, “We are”, “You are”, “They are”
Possessive Adjectives
Function: Possessive adjectives are used to indicate ownership or possession of nouns. They come before nouns to show that something belongs to someone or something else.
- Example: “My car is blue.” (The car belongs to me) / “Their house is big.” (The house belongs to them)
Forms: Possessive adjectives agree in number and gender with the noun they modify. In English, there are seven possessive adjectives: my, your, his, her, its, our, and their.
