You lose marks in Writing and Speaking not because your grammar is wrong, but because your words are ordinary.

“The problem is very big and getting worse” and “The problem is acute and shows no sign of abating” describe the same idea. One is a Band 6 sentence. The other is a Band 8 sentence. The gap between them is vocabulary — the right word, in the right form, used in its normal company of other words.
