WH- Questions in the Simple Present Tense

WH- questions are used to ask for specific information. They begin with a WH- word (what, where, when, why, who, which, whose, how) and follow a specific word order in the simple present tense.

Structure:

The general structure of WH- questions in the simple present tense is:

WH- word + Auxiliary verb (do/does) + Subject + Main verb (base form) + (Object/Complement)?

When to use “do” and “does”:

• “Do” is used with the subject pronouns: I, you, we, they, and plural nouns.
• “Does” is used with the subject pronouns: he, she, it, and singular nouns.

1. “What” Questions:
   • “What” is used to ask about things, actions, or ideas.
   • Example:
     • “What do you do on weekends?” (Asking about activities)
     • “What does she want for her birthday?” (Asking about a thing)
2. “Where” Questions:
   • “Where” is used to ask about locations.
   • Example:
     • “Where do they play soccer?”
     • “Where does the bus stop?”
3. “When” Questions:
   • “When” is used to ask about time.
   • Example:

     • “When do you go to bed?”
4. “Why” Questions:
