Telling the Time

The 12-hour clock divides the day into two sections: from midnight to noon (a.m.) and from noon to midnight (p.m.).
To differentiate morning and evening, we use “a.m.” (ante meridiem) for hours before noon and “p.m.” (post meridiem) for hours after noon.
Example: 11:20 a.m. is read as “eleven twenty a.m.”

Start by stating the hour: “It’s [hour] o’clock.”
For minutes past the hour (up to 30 minutes), use “past”: “It’s [minutes] past [hour].”
For minutes beyond the half hour, use “to”: “It’s [minutes] to [next hour].”
