TOEFL Vocabulary List: 2,000 Academic Words (PDF + Flashcards)

On the TOEFL, you don’t lose points because your English is broken — you lose them because a passage or lecture uses a word you half-know, and the clock doesn’t wait. Here’s the actual academic word list that closes that gap.

Why academic vocabulary is the real bottleneck

TOEFL passages and lectures are written in one consistent register: general academic English. The same few thousand words carry the meaning whether the topic is plate tectonics, memory research, or international trade — words like empirical, constitute, attribute, salient, tenuous, corroborate. Know them cold and the content is all you have to think about. Half-know them, and every paragraph or lecture costs you seconds you needed for the actual questions.

The 3 vocabulary tiers

Core (500 words) — the academic “signal” vocabulary every section leans on regardless of topic, sourced by working down the merged academic-frequency ranking: Coxhead’s Academic Word List, the Academic Vocabulary List from the 120-million-word academic corpus of COCA, and the New Academic Word List.

Subject (1,200 words, 100 per domain) — grouped by the twelve academic fields TOEFL draws from:

  • Biology & Life Science
  • Earth & Environmental Science
  • Astronomy & Physical Science
  • Chemistry & Materials
  • History & Archaeology
  • Art, Music & Architecture
  • Literature & Linguistics
  • Psychology & Cognitive Science
  • Sociology & Anthropology
  • Economics & Business
  • Political Science & Law
  • Technology & Engineering

Precision (300 words) — the score-topping upgrades like notwithstanding, substantiate, ostensibly, paradigmatic that lift a correct answer into a confident one, for candidates already scoring well.

How to actually learn them, not just recognise them

1. Meet the word in a real passage first. A bare word list can’t teach you how a word behaves in an actual academic sentence — reading it in context first makes the definition stick.
2. Drill it with audio, spaced over days. A handful of short reviews spread across several days beats one long cramming session, even at the same total study time — this is one of the most consistently replicated findings in memory research.
3. Test yourself before checking the answer. Trying to recall a word from memory, even getting it wrong first, builds retention better than re-reading a definition until it feels familiar.

Frequently asked questions

How many words do I need to know for a high TOEFL score?

There’s no official number, but a working academic vocabulary of around 2,000 words — covering general academic terms plus the common subject areas TOEFL draws from — covers the large majority of what a strong Reading and Listening score needs.

What’s the difference between Core, Subject, and Precision vocabulary?

Core words apply across any topic and should be learned first. Subject words are grouped by the twelve academic fields TOEFL uses. Precision words are advanced upgrades for candidates already scoring well.

Is a word list enough, or do I need audio too?

Audio matters specifically for TOEFL because Listening tests the same academic vocabulary at speed — recognising a word instantly by ear is a different skill from recognising it on a page.
